CHAPTER FIFTEEN: JOULES

Javier Torres looked at the clock. It was 3:42 a.m.

He wasn't going to get any sleep tonight. He opened his old laptop and powered it on. It wasn't going to tell him anything he didn't already know, and he knew as much, but he had to see the videos again. They had to be fake. They had to be. The alternative made his brain go into full revolt.

So, the facts. There was a serial killer. Strike that. There was at least one serial killer in the area. It appeared, appeared, that this woman wasn't actually human. M.O. seemed to shift from murder to..."draining." So, now she's serially consuming people, but not killing them. She found a "thing" that Yeager wanted, a cross. What did Lucy call it? An Essence Pool? Yeager doesn't know how she found it. Yeager showed up only after there was a visual identification of Vespid. Upton said he needed to call someone. How long was it after the call before Yeager showed up?

Torres flipped to a clean page in his notebook and hastily scribbled, "Look for Yeager's travel info. Inbound flight record?"

The duration, a few hours, would have required a car drive of at most maybe four or five hours. Or a commercial flight of the same duration with some really lucky boarding times. Or a chartered flight. Or a means of transportation beyond human ability.

He shook his head. No reason to bring supernatural elements into the equation until other means were exhausted. Assume chartered flight as best guess for radius.

That is a big radius. He shook his head.

Yeager would have had to mess with someone else's head up the chain beyond Upton. Upton would have gotten marching orders and maybe some kind of word to report when a visual was made, or maybe when there was a major break in the case. Someone upward in the chain of command was part of the problem, under Yeager's sway, and maybe they didn't even know it. The whole bureau was compromised, and trying to crack open the problem would just get him killed. Eaten.

Options: Retire, and let the terrible go unchecked. Stonewall the Vespid investigation until I have a chance to maybe get rid of Yeager and kicked out of the Bureau as a disgrace. Take out Yeager and Vespid myself, and bury the evidence as deep as I can, and maybe get killed and eaten, or just mind wiped if I fail. Go public, and lose every shred of credibility.

There was one other option that sat very badly with him. Assuming Vespid was telling the truth, do what Lucy said. Let Vespid clean up a bunch of terrible people, and let her go home. Maybe if he could get her to take Yeager out, or take him with her, it would be the least terrible option.

Torres sipped a cup of coffee, feeling the luke-warm liquid hit his sour stomach.

It was conceivable that Yeager was a legitimate agent of some organization. It was within the realm of possibility that Yeager wasn't doing anything terrible.
